James B. Hepworth, Ph.D., 82, of Salt Lake City, died October 21, 1993 in Salt Lake 
City. Born November 7, 1910 in Bountiful, Utah to Peter Leonard and Flora Victoria 
Burningham Hepworth. He married Jetta Bunker on September 17, 1943 in Salt Lake City.  
Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served as an LDS 
missionary in the German-Austrian Mission.  He was an avid fly-fisherman, and enjoyed 
gardening, reading, and traveling with his wife. Dr. Hepworth received his education 
at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Utah. He was 
Professor Emeritus in the Department of Languages of the College of Humanities at the 
Universtiy of Utah. He was author/editor of two books. He was published in Twentieth 
Century Literary Criticism.
He was Counselor on Student Military Relations at the University of Utah during the 
Vietnam War era and was a member of the Army and Navy Review Boards.
He was an officer in the Army Medical Administrative Corps in the European Theater 
during WWII and served in Germany in military government during and after the war.
He is survived by his wife of Salt Lake City; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and 
Matt Ramirez, Jill and Jeff Christensen; three grandchildren, James and Brooke Ramirez 
and Nate Christensen, all of Salt Lake City; a brother and sister-in-law, John L. and 
Caryl Hepworth, Brigham City, Utah; a sister-in-law, Nita Hepworth, Santa Monica, 
Calif.; and stepmother, RoMay Hepworth. 
Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 23, 1993 at 1 p.m. in the Crystal Heights 1st 
Ward, 1970 E. Stratford Ave. (2560 South).  Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. 
at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 S. and Saturday at the church one hour prior 
to services.  Interment, Bountiful City Cemetary. 
In lieu of flowers the family suggests the contributions may be made to the Red Butte 
Gardens and Arboretum, for a tree to be planted in his memory; c/o Red Butte Gardens and
